What Is an Eye Test? How Is It Performed?

An eye test, or vision test, measures the eyes' sensitivity to various colors, shapes, and letters. This makes it possible to easily determine whether refractive errors such as astigmatism, hyperopia, and myopia are present.

This test also plays a major role in diagnosing conditions such as color blindness and macular degeneration. Since it helps uncover many other eye diseases as well, this test plays an important role in early diagnosis and treatment.

What Is an Eye Test?

The examinations performed to assess a patient's overall eye health and determine whether any eye condition is present are called eye tests. Performed using various devices and instruments, these tests measure the eyes' response to light at certain distances and directions. In addition, various shapes and colors are shown to the person to determine the eyes' sensitivity to them.

Eye tests are also used to decide whether a patient is a suitable candidate for procedures such as laser treatment, trifocal lens, or monofocal lens.

What Are the Types of Eye Tests?

Different tests are used to identify different eye conditions. Some of these can be listed as follows:

  • Intraocular lens
  • Laser test
  • Amsler grid
  • Color blindness test
  • Duochrome test
  • Visual field measurement
  • Visual acuity measurement

What Is a Visual Field Test?

This test is performed to measure the outer boundaries of the visual field on each side. It can be performed with or without computer assistance.

  • The visual field test is performed briefly as follows:
  • The patient sits directly across from the physician. (There is a distance of 1 meter between the doctor and the patient.)
  • The patient is asked to close one eye.
  • During the test, the person is exposed to a light coming from different directions. The patient tells the doctor at which point they first saw the light and where it disappeared.
  • The doctor's field of vision is compared with the patient's field of vision. If the patient sees objects and light moving from different directions later than the doctor does, this indicates that they have a "narrowing of the visual field."
  • Computerized visual field tests work on a similar logic. The patient is told to close one eye. The person then follows randomly flashing bright points with the other eye. Each time the patient sees the light, they press the button under their hand. The test ends once enough bright points have flashed from all directions.

What Is a Visual Acuity Test?

During this procedure, each eye is tested separately. It is performed using a 10-level vision chart containing rows of letters and shapes. Other tools such as the Snellen chart and a near reading chart are also used.

Amsler Grid Test

The Amsler grid, a commonly used eye test, helps detect problems in the central visual field. This method is typically used for patients over the age of 40.

İdeal Göz Clinic, one of the Kayseri eye hospital options, uses modern technology for this test and similar tests.

Color Blindness Test

This test provides clues about how a person perceives various colors. Types include the Farnsworth Lantern, Munsell D-15, and Ishihara tests.

Our experienced physicians, leading names in Kayseri eye doctor searches, Prof. Dr. Hakkı DOĞAN, Prof. Dr. Mustafa KOÇ, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Necati DURU, and Op.
