What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is one of the most commonly encountered refractive errors. With this condition, the shape of the cornea, the front-most layer of the eye, becomes distorted, or an irregular curvature forms in the eye's lens. This causes light to fail to focus properly on the retina, resulting in a blurred image.
A common refractive error, astigmatism can affect both adults and children. Usually present from birth, this refractive error can also develop later as a result of eye surgery or eye injury. Because the cornea cannot refract light correctly due to this condition, it causes a blurry and unclear image.
Symptoms of Astigmatism
As with every refractive error, there are common symptoms seen with the development of astigmatism. The symptoms seen in a person with astigmatism are as follows;
- Headache
- Blurred or distorted vision at both near and far distances
- Excessive squinting
- Difficulty driving at night
- Eye fatigue during activities requiring prolonged focus
- Double vision in advanced, severe cases.
It would be helpful for individuals experiencing these types of symptoms to be examined by an eye doctor and have the necessary tests performed.
Astigmatism Treatment Methods
For an individual diagnosed with astigmatism, treatment may not be necessary if the level of astigmatism is mild. If the astigmatism is more severe, it is a condition that definitely needs to be treated. There are 3 different applications used as astigmatism treatment methods. These treatment methods are as follows;
Glasses: The use of glasses to correct the vision impairment. Glasses prepared according to the degree of astigmatism need to be worn continuously.
Contact lenses: Another treatment method applied for astigmatism is contact lenses. In some patients, contact lenses provide clearer vision and a wider field of view. The most effective type of lens for correcting astigmatism is special soft toric contact lenses.
Laser surgery: Many refractive errors can be treated with laser. Astigmatism can also be treated with the laser surgery method.
If you are experiencing blurred vision, or cannot get a clear image when looking at nearby or distant objects, you should apply to a healthcare institution right away for the diagnosis and treatment of your refractive error.
