Combined Treatment for Keratoconus

Keratoconus is known as a corneal disease. In a healthy eye, the cornea is round in shape, but in keratoconus it thins and bulges forward into a cone shape. This condition, which usually begins during adolescence, impairs vision if left untreated.
Keratoconus develops due to an imbalance of enzymes in the cornea. During this process, substances called free radicals damage the area, causing the cornea to weaken and bulge forward. Since this condition develops due to many different causes, different treatment methods are applied depending on the stage of the disease. Some treatment methods are sufficient on their own, while for other patients combined treatment is preferred for keratoconus. Combined treatment for keratoconus involves using laser treatment together with corneal cross-linking. These methods are the most commonly used approaches for treating keratoconus.
What Is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus, one of the eye diseases seen in one out of every 2000 people worldwide, is a frequently researched topic. It occurs due to the breakdown or weakening of the collagen tissue in the corneal layer. As the cornea weakens and breaks down due to various factors, it develops a conical bulge forward. This disease, mostly caused by genetic predisposition, can be seen in more than one member of the same family.
Due to keratoconus, the corneal tissue loses its perfect dome-like structure and develops a shape irregularity. In this disease process, both eyes are usually affected. However, one eye may be at a more advanced stage than the other.
Keratoconus can only be fully diagnosed following an examination by a specialist physician. Once a diagnosis of keratoconus is made following an eye exam by a Kayseri eye doctor, treatment is applied according to the stage of the disease.
How Is Keratoconus Treated?
Keratoconus has stages of progression. In the early and mild stages, different treatments can be used, while as the disease progresses, more advanced technology treatment methods are used. There is quite a wide variety of treatments available for keratoconus. The keratoconus treatment options are as follows;
- Cross-linking, corneal cross-linking
- Special soft contact lenses
- Rigid contact lenses
- Rigid contact lens application over a soft contact lens
- Hybrid contact lens
- Intracorneal ring
All these treatment methods are applied at İdeal Göz Clinic, one of the options among Kayseri eye hospitals.
What Is Corneal Cross-Linking Treatment for Keratoconus?
Cross-linking is one of the most commonly used treatments for keratoconus. This treatment method can be used alone, or combined with lens and laser support. Cross-linking treatment, aimed entirely at stopping the progression of the disease, is completed in as little as 40 minutes.
Cross-linking treatment for keratoconus aims to strengthen the weakened cornea. UV rays are used to increase the corneal bonds. In some patients, laser and cross-linking treatment are used in combination. If the patient's corneal thickness is above 450 microns, laser treatment is applied in addition to cross-linking.
